Island Shut Down because of Tourists

Boracay Island, in the Philippines, is one of the most popular tourist destinations. In fact, in 2017 Boracay had over two million tourist visits. While the island is beautiful and a favorite destination to visit, the Philippine government has recently announced their plans on closing the island in order to clean up and restore the environment. According to the article, “The Philippine Department of Environment and Natural Resources, The Department of Tourism, and the Department of Interior and Local Government have recommended a six-month closure of the island due to poor solid waste management, solid waste contamination of the beach, and illegal constructions.” Over the past few months, the island has been filled with green algae. Studies conducted there show that the slimy algae relates back to the lack of cleanliness and management of trash at resorts. A specific example of the lack of cleanliness in the resorts is the large amount of human waste found in the water there. While temporarily shutting down the island may be beneficial, it will not solve all the problems the island faces.

    It is terrible that it has gotten so bad that they now have to close the island to clean up the environment. But hopefully after they reopen the island to tourists they can stay on top of their game and keep the island clean.

    I think it's great that the Philippine government is looking after the environment of the island, instead of focusing on the potential profit that the island makes. Although, it is very sad that the environment on the island has become so unhealthy due to excessive amounts of tourists.

    That is ashamed about the environment on the island but it is very very good to hear that a leader in this day in age cares about the environment enough to take the loss in profit for the country to do right by the environment. More leaders should learn from this..

Within the past two decades ocean currents have been speeding up at a fast rate because of climate change. It was predicted that ocean currents would speed up, but not this quickly. Since this was not expected, people are worried that climate change could have many other effects that we are not prepared for. Global ocean circulation has accelerated by 36 percent since the early 1990's. Our oceans have a huge impact on the planet and the different effects of climate change will change our planet for the worse. It is scary that scientists have underestimated the effects of climate change and it shows how little time we have to work on this issue. Everybody needs to understand that we are facing a huge problem and if we don't all start to act on it then there is not much hope for a good future. I hope that the future planned research goes well and scientists can learn more about the unknowns. link

linky Summary Coyotes are becoming an increasing risk in urban areas. They are coming into contact with people and pets more and more as time goes on. Researchers decided to find out what is making coyotes so comfortable around humans and how to prevent these interactions. They are led to believe that it begins with the parenting. They believe the fearlessness is passed down from parent to offspring.  They went to a wildlife conservatory in Utah to observe the captive, but mostly wild, coyotes that reside there. When the keepers feed them, they usually made as little contact with the coyotes as possible, to limit the human interaction.
