Greenland is on track to lose ice faster than in any century over 12,000 years

This article explains how Greenland is losing large amounts of ice, which is increasing more and more everyday. Climate change has affected Greenland, causing temperatures to rise. The new temperatures have caused large amounts of  ice sheets to melt. According to researchers, the ice sheets are melting rapidly, more than it has ever for the past 12,000 years. Researcher Jason Briner suggests that the world needs to go on an energy diet, our century will only be a bit higher than the past 12,000 years of how much ice Greenland has lost. To prevent more ice sheets to melt quickly, the world (especially America) needs to go on an energy diet, and emissions need to be cut off. Briner and other researchers from different industries created this "state-of-the-art" ice sheet model, in order to record the changes of the southwestern part of Greenland. To find out new information, they started form the beginning, observing what has happened to ice sheets from 12,000 years ago to present day. They used this model to find out the temperatures, and precipitations, seeing how it affected Greenland's ice glaciers in the past, or how it affects it in the present and future. Briner shares that the model showed information on how much the temperature has risen over the years, and how the Earth's greenhouse has affected the area.

  1. This is a prime example of how climate change is changing the environment. We have all heard of the changes around the world with climate change and we learned about it in our last unit. I have definitely heard of glaciers melting because of climate change, and knowing that Greenland is made of ice, I can see how that would affect them long-term. Global warming and climate change is already happening and there is nothing we can do about it, so I am worried for Greenland because in a very short amount of time, they could be reduced to nothing.

  2. in the near future when the ice has melted almost completely , all of the living things, like animals and plants will have to adapt to the new temperatures. It will be hard for them and some of the species will die off or decrease in the size of their population.

  3. This research is highly valuable in determining the affects of climate change on our planet. It would be even more beneficial if the team that analyzes the data mentioned above, could deduce just how much Greenland's ice sheets have been affected by human activities. Such data could help scientists work to preserve our climate conditions- laying out ways society can cut back on environmentally harmful lifestyles. It is vital we try to slow the melting of these ice sheets, as they serve as precious animal habitats, and a source of the world's freshwater (a resource that is quickly depleting). In addition, melting ice caps help contribute to ocean levels rising, putting people who live near the coast at risk over the next century and beyond. Therefore, it's in everyone's best interest to try and help reduce the factors that are causing climate change and the ice to melt in Greenland and across the world.
