Why California is Planning to Ban Fracking


    In an effort to protect the environment & prevent future damage to the land, California is moving to put a ban on fracking by 2024. Since fracking causes harm to waterways, ecosystems, & individual organisms, California Governor Gavin Newsom hopes to eliminate it. In order to do this, they would need to find a new way to produce oil needed in California households, along with relying more heavily on alternative ways already in existence. This would be a big step towards a healthier environment, so a lot of thought would have to be put into the process & how to make it become reality.

    I definitely think this is a great step to take, & I hope it works. Although fracking isn't the only thing currently destroying the Earth & its climate, it is a major factor. After this has been achieved, we could focus on other issues & forms of pollution that we can try to remove, or at least greatly reduce. Another upside about this is that if California can do it, hopefully other states & countries will follow suit, which will make an even larger impact.

    I agree with you that once they achieve this, they can focus on removing pollution but are they only doing this in California? if they were going to ban fracking in every state where it occurs like the Mid West and Texas, i think it would have a greater affect.

    Banning fracking, especially by a date so soon is a monumental step towards a healthier environment. However, I begin to question the downsides to this. Obviously it increases the health of the nearby environment, but if fracking is a large part of business in California, then it may be hard to accomplish, and even if accomplished, actually detrimental to the people living there.

Acid Zone in Chesapeake Bay Found

     According to the University of Delaware, the Chesapeake Bay is becoming acidic as it has gone to 7.4 pH from an average of 8.2. The oxidation of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide may be the factor that is leading to the higher acidity levels in coastal oceans, but it can eventually lead to more of open oceans. Naturally the waters of the Chesapeake Bay have a regulatory system that holds back the increase of acidity levels in the area, and this works as the dissolving of living shells, non-living aragonite, and calcite minerals.
