Algae Can Poison Your Dog

There have been many reports of dogs dying after swimming in ponds or lakes across the US due to a poisonous algae blooming in bodies of water. The algae is called Cyanobacteria and has a blue-green color. The algae blooms during the warmer months, so there's more cases then. The algae can affect humans and other animals too, but the reactions are much less severe. Dogs are most susceptible because they can easily ingest the toxin while in the water. I think it's important for people to know about possible dangers to their pets in the environment and take precautions to protect them. Polluting the streams with fertilizer from rainwater runoff is causing a growth of the algae, so I believe more precautions should be taken to avoid this. We should be doing more to prevent the environment from becoming more polluted so that we can have a stable and safe place to live.

  1. I don't have any dogs of my own but these sad stories about how algae is killing these innocent animals have me almost in tears. Its upsetting that the article doesn't mention how to solve these issues and I personally don't have any solutions other than keep your dogs away from still waters.

  2. I thought this article was pretty informative. I do have a dog and I though it was good to know that algae could possibly harm my dog if she was to go swimming in a lake or pound. I do agree that we should be doing more to prevent the environment from becoming polluted so that things like algae from hurting our dogs and others animals.

  3. I've heard of different bacteria that can ultimately be fatal to humans if consumed or absorbed in places like lakes or other stagnant bodies of water, but I wasn't quite aware that it affected our pets as well. I'll have to keep that in mind the next time I take my dogs hiking.

  4. I like your comment at the end about how we should, "be doing more to prevent the environment from becoming more polluted so that we can have a stable and safe place to live." Which I fully agree with, due to the fact that some places are becoming so polluted that we can't even swim or even visit certain areas (here's an article I found https://www.cnn.com/2019/07/23/health/us-beaches-pollution-study-trnd/index.html). It's sad to know that some areas in the world are unstable or not safe anymore due to pollution. But obviously, there's a lot of government bodies that don't enforce or have any rules regulating industries and their impact on the environment.
