Warming ocean water is turning 99 percent of these sea turtles female

Because of the warmer water, a majority of female sea turtles are being born. There is about one male for every 116 females. Sea turtles can survive with fewer males than females, however, scientists do not know how much of a difference is too much.

  1. It is actually not the warming water that allows the eggs to become females, it is the temperature of the sand. When the temperature of the sand increases, so does the chemistry of the egg. Because the incubation temperature has become so much higher over the past decade, there has been a major shift to almost a completely female dominant population. This means that it is becoming harder and harder for female sea turtles to find mates, which in turn will decrease the amount of eggs laid each year. This could be a major problem because sea turtles populations are already on the decline due to dangers from human activity. The future of sea turtles is very dangerous because of the increasing amount of changes to their environment and population dynamic.
