Every human should be alarmed by the plastic crisis in our oceans

If we do not try to decrease the influx of trash into the oceans, there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean. The trash that is in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is mostly small things of plastic that are broken down by the sun.  When the sun breaks down the plastic, it's not biodegrading but actually entering animals bodies which kills them or enters the marine food chain. Although the majority of the trash in the ocean can't be seen, there is a large amount of micro-plastics that have been found in California.  There is a senator's bill that will encourage the Trump administration to prioritize ocean pollution.

Reflection:  I think this article brings up many issues that I was not aware of before.  I knew the issue with trash being dispersed around the ocean was an issue, but I never knew what happens with that trash once it begins to be broken down by the sun. The fact that the plastic is killing fish and possibly entering the marine food chain is alarming. I feel the senator's bill that is being used to prioritize pollution is a good start on the path to cleaner oceans.

  1. I read in another article that there are certain satellites that can actually see trash/plastic. https://eos.org/articles/satellite-imagery-reveals-plastic-garbage-in-the-ocean. So, the garbage in the ocean is getting so bad to the point that certain satellites are starting to pick up on it. It makes me sad personally that certain satellites are picking up on our growing pollution levels.

  2. I find this article so sad that this is how we are treating our plane today. Soon the ocean will just be a bunch of garbage and plastic, no marine life. We need to start working together to use less plastic waste, with other alternatives and we need to have better ways of recycling. If we do not fix this problem soon, we might not be here much longer.

  3. I think its very interesting and that the small particles of plastic are a common cause of harm to ocean life. I also was not aware that the sun was responsible for the majority of the degrading of plastic

  4. I think that this is a very serious issue because we are polluting and harming marine animals that we rely on. If we keep polluting the oceans and don't do anything to help we will have less of a population of fish. With a lesser population of fish we won't have as much food because fishing is a big industry that supports it's local economy.

  5. This is a very important subject due to that the U.S could clean this up but many of the government officials deiced to ignore the issues that we are destroying animal habitats. According to https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/study-shows-the-great-pacific-garbage-patch-is-growing/40612/ the patch is twice the size of Texas of just garbage floating in the ocean. Also this site says that it would cost 122 million to 489 million to clean this area.
