Power Storms May Be Causing 'Stormquakes' Offshore

Hurricanes are becoming powerful enough to hit the seafloor creating an earthquake.  These storms can reach a magnitude of 3.5 that can cause minor damage.  It has already been known that waves create seismic waves however, they have never been something extremely strong.  In order to have these stormquakes, the seismic waves have to meat a certain level.  Because of this, not all big storms cause stromquakes.  For example, Hurricane Sandy did not but Hurricane Bill did.  This honestly concerns me since it could possibly create major damage.  Also, these stormquakes are relatively new which means that scientists do not know exactly how to measure them.  These storms could be approaching and we wouldn't know exactly what to do about it.  However, some people find them fascinating and want to learn more.

    I believe that these earthquakes are a new and exciting discovery, but they are also becoming very harmful to ocean life. Because scientists can not measure or predict these earthquakes it is more difficult for us to prepare for these situations and repair the damage that it causes. I feel that the more we learn about these earthquakes, the more prepared we can be for when they occur.

    I feel that these storms would be something very interesting to learn about. It seems that because of the damage these earthquakes can have it is more important to know about the, but not many people do.

Acid Zone in Chesapeake Bay Found

     According to the University of Delaware, the Chesapeake Bay is becoming acidic as it has gone to 7.4 pH from an average of 8.2. The oxidation of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide may be the factor that is leading to the higher acidity levels in coastal oceans, but it can eventually lead to more of open oceans. Naturally the waters of the Chesapeake Bay have a regulatory system that holds back the increase of acidity levels in the area, and this works as the dissolving of living shells, non-living aragonite, and calcite minerals.
