Climate Change May Increase Volcano Eruptions

In the article a test completed by the University of Leeds has found that their are less volcanic eruptions in Iceland, where their is more glacier coverage. With the United States their is more human global warming contributing to climate change which may increase volcanic eruption. Every small change will increase the chance for volcanic eruptions.

  2. Not only is human influenced global warming contributing to volcanic eruptions, but in the article I read, it is also contributing to hurricanes and hurricane intensity. If this is the case why is it not made more of a priority to decrease our ecological footprint? We have one planet so why wouldn't we take more care of it?

  3. Increased volcanic activity is certainly plausible in the future, but more likely due to a natural climatic cycle rather than human induced carbon emissions. One place to look at to potentially correlate and see the increased volcanic activity is the sun. The sun? Yes, the sun. Right now, sunspot numbers and total solar irradiance (TSI) is "turning the corner" so to speak from the very high values of the late 1900s and early 2000s. The solar cycle 24 we are entering is certainly lower than previous cycles and future cycles are forecast by some to drop lower than we have seen in centuries, potentially since the 1600s when the little ice age occurred. Why does this matter? Well, when lowering solar activity, specifically the sun, is experienced, the sun becomes less active and isn't as successful at protecting the earth from outside cosmic rays. This can be evidently seen from a weakening heliospheric pressure field, a feature that can reflect solar wind, of the solar system. The cosmic rays that are in the solar wind can then interact with the magnetic field of the Earth, and through the toroidal and polloidal magnetic field lines, can interact with the core of the Earth. Through the increased "intake" of cosmic particles into Earth's core, the Earth core can become more active and unstable, resulting in increased tectonic plate movement, and ultimately resulting in increased volcanic activity from dormant volcanoes and cause more volcanoes to form as well. Why did I write all of this out? To show that science is never "settled" ;)
