PAGC proposes new solution to CWD epidemic

The Pennsylvania Game Commision has proposed yet another solution to help reduce the state's problem with chronic wasting disease (CWD) in its whitetail deer. the new solution would propose expanding hunting seasons, removing antler requirements and increase antlerless permit allocations. along with allowing hunters to take aditional antlered deer in areas that have a large amount of CWD cases. this is interesting because as a hunter myself, the main reason to go out and hunt is for the meat that the game provides however deer with CWD are unsuitable for human consumption. i really wonder how these newly proposed sugestions would effect the herd populations since more deer will be killed by both the disease and by people.

  1. I dont quite understand how that would work because of the objective to hunt for most people is the meat and when you can not eat or do anything useful with the deer itd be kind of a waste of time for the hunter. Unless the hunter is looking for the trophy buck it wouldn't help his case any by adding antlerless tags. I believe an award of money and a refund of tag for every deer brought to game commission with CWD would be a more resourceful and profitable for the testing of this disease. The hunter would not want to just go waste time and money to hunt something he cant event use as a resource.

    1. How do you know that the deer you would shoot has CWD? I know there would be obvious ones, but how about the ones who show no visable signs- What will stop hunters from shooting the healthy deer?
