Australia’s Record Heat Means Another Blow to Great Barrier Reef

This year, as well as in 2016 and 2017, scientists have noticed a warmer change in the temperture of Australia's oceans. This causes coral reefs to be bleached in the oceans. Some of these reefs can recover if not severely affected, but most often die. These reefs support thousands of types of organisms that live in water. The tempertures have been increasingly warmer, but this year they have been more than five degrees above average. Over eighty percent of corals observed had been bleached. It was also observed that there were a lot of dead or dying coral. The Reef 2050 plan was set to reduce water pollution that could threaten corals, regulate agricultural runoff, port ddevelopment, and dreging. I think that it's good that the government is realizing that there is a problem with the coral reefs dying all over the world, but they are trying to solve it in the wrong ways. The 2050 plan should help the reefs some, but the only way the reefs can stay alive is if the global water tempertures drop. This is more expensive and complictaed, but it's the only effective way to prevent coral reefs from dying. Making an effort to help climate change would help the coral reefs as well as many other things being negatively impacted that we hear about in the news with nothing being done about them.

    It seems like the warming of the waters is almost unstoppable at this point. Hopefully in the future we can find a way to reduce the use of greenhouse gases and stop the spreading of pollution to resolve this problem, but it is certainly not looking good.

    It is unfortunate that the plan will not completely be able to work to get rid of the pollution in the reefs. Climate change is negatively impacting all of the true wonders of our world. Hopefully in years to come society decides to come together to help our world.

Acid Zone in Chesapeake Bay Found

     According to the University of Delaware, the Chesapeake Bay is becoming acidic as it has gone to 7.4 pH from an average of 8.2. The oxidation of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide may be the factor that is leading to the higher acidity levels in coastal oceans, but it can eventually lead to more of open oceans. Naturally the waters of the Chesapeake Bay have a regulatory system that holds back the increase of acidity levels in the area, and this works as the dissolving of living shells, non-living aragonite, and calcite minerals.
