Earth Getting Greener

With the help of NASA, we have gathered information proving that the earth is increasing in greenness since 2000.  NASA has put together data from a map showing the amount of greenness in the past along with computer data from Tera and Aqua satellites and concluded that the earth was greener in 2018 than it was in the 1980s.  This global greening is due to the amount of the increased levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, making earth temperatures cooler, and allowing plants to consume more carbon dioxide.  This causes evapotranspiration, which is leading to the increase in greenness on earth.  Some believe that this turn of events is ironic, because the carbon in the atmosphere that is causing harmful climate change, is also helping plant growth.  The greening of the earth is becoming favorable to our ecosystem, but in order to maintain the hospitality of earth, we need to reduce carbon emissions from the atmosphere. I believe that the increased greenness of the earth is a positive step towards stopping global warming.  If we continue to attempt to reduce the amount of carbon in the atmosphere, we will be able to keep the greenness of the earth at a high percentage, while stopping serious climate change.

  1. It is very interesting to think that carbon is improving plant growth, but still harming our atmosphere resulting in climate change. Decreasing the amount of carbon in the atmosphere has been a common topic when talking about improving the environment. It's fascinating to know that there is something good that came out of it. Hopefully we can find a balance in order to reduce the carbon however, continue to keep the plant growth in order to stop climate change.

  2. It is concerning to learn that carbon can have both negative and positive effects on the environment. On the positive end carbon can help increase plant growth but on the negative end there is an enormous amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere that is causing a decrease in temperatures causing climate change. I think it is a good idea to reduce the amount of carbon in the atmosphere to stop the negative effects of climate change but also help improve plant growth at the same time.
