Science Behind Why Cracking Knuckles Can Be So Noisy

There recently has been scientific debate over what causes the noise when someone cracks their knuckles. A new study suggests that this noise is caused by a partial collapse in the small bubbles of air in joint fluid.

Personally, I find this to be very interesting because I crack my own knuckles. I never really gave it much thought as to why cracking my knuckles can make such a loud noise.

  1. I wonder what this would do to help in the debate that "cracking your knuckles will give you arthritis"... many people do not know why or how knuckles will make that noise.. and most people think of the noise as the joints being popped out of socket.

  2. This scientific debate is very interesting to me because I constantly am cracking as many bones as I can. This is definitely something i never put a lot of thought into and have done it for the longest time just as a force of habit.
