Beautiful Devils the Lantern Flys


Beautiful, graceful, hopping devils. In the range of about one inch long, grey with black spots along with red, white, and black hind wings the new invasive specie emerges. Can you guess it? Yes, the Lantern Fly. Originally originated from China, India, and Japan they have now invaded the US. Many are left scared running and screaming when one flies above there head. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania are trying everything to get rid of the pest but they need you help. So instead of running in fear stand your ground and step on them! Take action, by spraying or scraping there eggs from the trees around you to prevent future generations. This article relates to environmental science because these invasive specie invaded our environment and is causing havoc to our environment. I found this article interesting because I enjoyed reading about problems close to home and learning about how to help beat this problem.     I agree that Spotted Lanternflies are indeed "beautiful, graceful, hopping devils" because while they are beautiful, they are a danger to crops and trees. I am constantly finding myself stepping on them in town, at my house, and at my best friend's house. They seem to be everywhere this year, and making sure that they are under control is certainly important. I would also like to add that besides spraying or scraping their eggs from the Ailanthus altissima trees, you can also get a tape that you can wrap around the lower area of the tree so that when the Spotted Lanterflies try to climb the tree they will stick to the paper and eventually die.

    This article is very interesting. I have witnessed people running and screaming from the pesky creatures. I think that we should experiment a little more with other ways of getting rid of the Lantern flies than just spraying more toxic pesticides around the area.

    I agree with you that we need to be taking action with the lantern flies. Instead of running away from them actually kill them. This year there seems to be a multitude of them. I feel that more people need to be made aware what to do to get ride of the Lantern flies, and people need to act upon what was taught of them and there may be a decrease in them,

    I also agree that we need to take action when it comes to the lantern flies. The fact that they are negatively affecting our environment is not okay, and we need to put that to an end. Like Julia said, I believe that we should find safer ways to get rid of them rather than just spraying pesticides all over the place.

    We do need to get rid of the lantern flies. They are becoming a big problem because they just keep spreading and spreading. The way that they are affecting the environment is that they kill many trees. Someone needs to find a way to put a stop to them spreading. There needs to be some kind of spray that someone could create that kills them and that is still healthy for the environment.

Acid Zone in Chesapeake Bay Found

     According to the University of Delaware, the Chesapeake Bay is becoming acidic as it has gone to 7.4 pH from an average of 8.2. The oxidation of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide may be the factor that is leading to the higher acidity levels in coastal oceans, but it can eventually lead to more of open oceans. Naturally the waters of the Chesapeake Bay have a regulatory system that holds back the increase of acidity levels in the area, and this works as the dissolving of living shells, non-living aragonite, and calcite minerals.
