In this article it talks about how the Zollverein, a coal mine is changing to renewable resources. The whole complex use to be coal and be bad for the workers and all cloudy but now it is changed to UNESCO. This relates to environmental science because it is talking about renewable resources, which is part of the chapter we just learned. Turning this place into renewable resources is very healthy for our planet, it won't be as hard on the environment and because the coal is a non renewable resource it could potentially run out. I found it really interesting that the article said that today there are only two hard coals that remains, that really shows how quickly these nonrenewable resources run out, and it is really good to be changing from using those. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/germany-rsquo-s-transition-from-coal-to-renewables-offers-lessons-for-the-world/
Plastic Eating Bacteria
Two high school senior girls in Vancouver have recently discovered a process that helps break down plastic. This process begins with solvent that dissolves the plastic, and then what is left over can be consumed by their newly developed bacteria. This bacteria was made to specifically eat phthalate, a material found in plastic that is hard to break down. Over in Japan at Kyoto University, they found a completely new bacteria species that eats plastics. There are also current studies on how meal worms can eat Styrofoam and plastic. I believe that this could be a extremely beneficial discovery to the world. Being that all the plastic ever used is still floating around somewhere on earth either in landfills or oceans, although side effects are not yet known. Learn about the bacteria here!
That is so cool! We have been using coal since the dawn of time I can see why we only have two hard coals left. I find this article interesting as well because its a big change going from coal to renewable resources which is a big part of what we are learning. Great job!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Becca, this article is definitely interesting! Switching from coal to renewable resources is very positive and much safer for our environment. By using the renewable resources, we won't run out of the nonrenewable resources (such as the coal) so quickly and will in turn, have them for a much longer time period.
