Iceberg Breaks off the Antarctic Glacier

An iceberg 4.5 times the size of Manhattan has broken off from the Antarctic glacier. This is concerning because that iceberg will potentially melt causing the sea level to rise. This also leaves the rest of the iceberg at more of a risk of melting. At this point scientists know that the glacier will melt, but the question is when. One can argue why the iceberg is melting. Is it because of human caused global warning or is it from increased ocean flow at the bottom of the ice shelf?

    I found this article very interesting, especially with the recent debates on whether or not climate change is actually real. Personally, I believe that it could be caused by human-generated global warming. This also has a direct effect since the melting will cause the sea level to rise.

    Although the article states that it is inevitable that the glacier is going to melt, I believe that it is still pertinent that, as a race, we try to decrease our ecological footprint. It is not proven that global warming is the cause of the iceberg breaking off, but it is still necessary we take precautions in case it is. By decreasing pollution and carbon emissions we are possibly preventing further glacier/iceberg conflicts that may arise in the future.

Acid Zone in Chesapeake Bay Found

     According to the University of Delaware, the Chesapeake Bay is becoming acidic as it has gone to 7.4 pH from an average of 8.2. The oxidation of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide may be the factor that is leading to the higher acidity levels in coastal oceans, but it can eventually lead to more of open oceans. Naturally the waters of the Chesapeake Bay have a regulatory system that holds back the increase of acidity levels in the area, and this works as the dissolving of living shells, non-living aragonite, and calcite minerals.
