Spotted Lanternfly Quarantine Expands in Pennsylvania

With the recent spike in Spotted Lantern-fly populations in Pennsylvania, more counties are being added to the quarantine list. These bugs are destroying a huge amount of crops throughout the state, as well as eating away trees. I feel that these quarantines and immediate actions are necessary due to the amount of damage that these insects can do. Especially with the large agricultural industry in Pennsylvania. We should all be doing our part to kill the population of the Spotted Lantern-flies.

  1. I definitely agree with this as they are such a threat to our environment. They are destroying the environment around and hurting the agricultural studies around us. I fully support your stand of eliminating the laternflies completely.

  2. I do agree we should do the best of our abilities to stop these insects, but unfortunately I also feel as if it is too late to stop them and there are too many. No matter what we try to do, more and more will come and it is beyond our control.

  4. I think that it is good to quarantine these areas, how many are unaware of what the quarantine actually means. "The general quarantine of the two townships restricts movement of any material or object that can spread the pest. This includes firewood or wood products, brush or yard waste, remodeling or construction materials and waste, packing material like boxes, grapevines for decorative purposes or as nursery stock, and any outdoor household articles like lawnmowers, grills, tarps and any other equipment, trucks or vehicles not stored indoors.
"Businesses in the general quarantine area need to obtain a Certificate of Limited Permit from the department in order to move articles. Criminal and civil penalties of up to $20,000 and prison time can be imposed for violations by businesses or individuals." That quote came directly from state law. The power needs to now be put in the hands of the people of these counties to stop the invasive species from spreading. The law can only do so much, ,as it is now the peoples' job to limit the expansion of the species.
