Worlds First Head Transplant

This article is about a Chinese and an Italian surgeon who plan to do the worlds first head transplant in China. This is crazy to think about and there is a lot of debate on whether this should happen. Also, it seems that a lot of the motivation for the Chinese to do this is to surpass the US as the world leader in all fields. Is this valid reason to do the procedure that will cost $100 million and put lives at risk?

  1. Not super duper environmental... but totally creepy! And, I agree, an interesting controversy to argue about. :)

  2. I wonder if other surgeons will also participate in the controversial transplant since it is such a long surgery. I would imagine the procedure is too long for just two surgeons to stay focused and complete on their own.

    1. The article says that the surgery will require several dozen surgeons and take more than 24 hours. I feel like there will be a lot of surgeons who would want to be part of this unique surgery.

  3. This is super creepy but its so interesting that medical knowledge has developed so much that some doctors are willing to take a risk like that. I'm interested to see if other doctors start to preform this procedure or if it remains a one or two time thing.

  5. This is a very creepy procedure that will be done, but if it really works will we see more of them in the future.

  6. While it is very cool, I don't see this as very practical. For anyone else who would want this procedure would have to get lucky to get a body donor.

  7. I do not find this creepy at all. The procedure that is about to be performed is a medical marvel and if all is successful, will pave the way for plenty of more uncommon operations that doctors are trying to come up with. It is also important to note, the reason this is not being performed in the United States is due to ethical reasons the US has about operations like a head transplant. It is definitely going to be fun watching the operation unfold.

  9. I find this head transplant both interesting and baffling. The time and precision required to detach and reattach all the nerves so the person can survive must be immense. Also, I would imagine the likelihood of the head being rejected after surgery is fairly great. The fact that is even a possibility is amazing, although I find it strange that someone agreed to have their head transplanted. It would also be interesting to know if this will become a more accepted, manageable procedure in the distant, or not so distant, future.

  10. I think that this surgery is pretty interesting and can change the way future surgeons learn and work. Even though it costs a lot of money, it is a move towards the future and will be life-changing for many people if it works.
