Countries need to drastically cut emissions
A new report shows that the world needs to drastically cut its emissions if it wants to meet the Paris Climate agreement's previous goal of limiting the warming to 2 degrees Celsius. The US's participation in the climate agreement is up in the air as President Trump has started proceedings to withdraw from said agreement as early as November 2020. The current emissions may already cause a 1.5 degree increase, so major changes need to be made. Smaller countries which are majorly affected by the emissions will try to focus on the seven major economic powerhouses that make up over 50% of the emissions. Those countries have the ability to change their emissions, but it will have to be a drastic change in the structure of their energy source.
The issue that I have with most people is that they believe, and rightfully so, that global warming will not affect them drastically within their lifetime. It may not even make a drastic change in my lifetime, but if nothing is changed now irreversible effects to the world will occur that the next generations will be stuck with. It is also frustrating to see that the major economic powerhouses, who have the money and resources to decarbonize, need to be focused on to change. Something needs to be done, because I would prefer to not be either known as the generation that ruined the environment or inherit a world where the environment is beyond repair

I definitely understand this frustration you have, and also believe that many of these businesses/companies that hold a lot of the power in our economy need to be taking steps toward reducing their carbon footprint when it comes to producing their products and or services. However, I believe it is in our best interest to not necessarily blame these people, as it would be a better and more efficient way in advocating for eco-friendly business tactics by us aiding in this problem by reducing our very own carbon footprints, as small as they may be. This being important because it will hopefully set examples for these companies so that they will soon follow in the push towards a cleaner Earth, because they won't otherwise if being blamed for everything that has happened due to climate change up to this point.
ReplyDeleteMr. Kemp, do you not think that larger contributors to global emissions, such as Pakistan or China need to be pressured more over countries which have already taken great steps to cut co2 emissions? This may have a greater effect on the environment as a whole.
ReplyDeleteMr. Sherman, if that is even your real name, I do agree with your statement. However, I think that countries such as the ones you mentioned would be more likely to change if we kept the same pressure on everyone as opposed to focusing on them, as they would likely feel offended and not do any change in some sort of childish spite.
