The cure for cancer?

British scientists say they have accidentally discovered a new type of immune cell which may help in developing a therapy to treat all cancers. They call it a "one-size-fits-all" cancer treatment The CAR-T that is currently used widely is only good for a few types of cancers, and not for solid tumors, solid tumors make up the majority of cancers. So this is not the best cancer treatment for most people, But the newly discovered T-cells have this thing called a T-cell receptor, which “recognizes and kills most human cancer types, while ignoring healthy cells.” Because of that reason exactly cancer can be treated more effectively resulting in more lives saved.
I believe that this is a breakthrough and something that should be looked into for the united states. This is something previously thought to never be possible. But with this discovery it has been proven wrong and now gives hope to the cancer community in possibly being able to overcome this horrible disease.

I'm curious to see what the cost of the treatment is. How hard is the treatment to produce? I believe that cancer treatments are far to costly to the patient.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great development, however, it most likely will not be available to the average person. It probably costs more than the average person could afford. It is most likely years away from actually being used on patients because they will need to run tests and trial runs, but I'm looking forward to seeing if they can make it affordable and available.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Skylar and Ethan that these treatments will more then likely not be reasonably priced, and only people who have a lot of money will be able to afford these types of treatments. Cancer research and treatments in present time are extremely expensive so I can only imagine how much a treatment that could "cure cancer" would be.
ReplyDeleteAlthough we all would like to believe that this could be a cure all to cancer, I do have a few concerns. Firstly being the "one size fits all approach" All people and all cancers are extremely different. In different parts of the body as well as different stages. Also I would be curious as to how the T-cells are administered. By injection? directly to the tumor?
ReplyDeleteIt is good to hear that scientists are making new discoveries to possibly help cure cancer, but I feel like this will not work out. I do not think it will work out because something like this would cost a lot of money and it would be a long time before it would become available for regular use in hospitals. The prices for this would be extremely high because the US government does not want to decrease the profit they are making off of the other treatments and overall the whole pharmaceutical industry. It would be awesome if this would work out, but I do not believe it will.
