Fishy Trick Lures Life Back to Coral Reefs
The article talks first about the natural sustenance that marine life provide for coral reefs. Then it expands to talk about how the destruction of reefs doesn't have any apparent natural solution. In order to test a new artificial solution, a dummy reef is assembled and aquatic sounds of life underwater, from shrimp snapping to croaking fish. Many other reefs were assembled without the sound amplification and the results were quite different. The reef with the sounds grew quicker and attracted many more creatures. Although the method seems very simple, it warns of false advertising, and sometimes can lead to the deaths of those attracted to the reef if the environment isn't spot on.
I find this super interesting because this is a civilian solution to a problem, which is what we need more of. In modern day, the common mindset is to make every problem a government problem, one that they have to fix. I think these civilian approaches to environmental concerns is the best way to go about a problem, because the government doesn't always know best, and any issue you have, if you want to see it fixed, you need to do it yourself. Either way, it is nice to see people innovating in order to preserve such a beautiful piece of nature.

Do you feel that by making our own reefs we are disturbing a natural process? I feel as if maybe we had avoided destroying the reefs in the first place this could have been avoided?
ReplyDeleteI agree with you with the fact that we should be working to fix these problems ourselves instead of solely relying on and waiting for the government to come up with a solution for these issues. If we want to reverse these problems, we need to take action and stop waiting for other people, who might not have the environment's best interest in mind, to come up with a fix. And although there seems to be a risk with making our own coral reefs, I think it is a step in the right direction.
