White House wants to change environmental rules to speed up highway projects, pipelines and more

Summary:

The White House wants to make projects for example, highways, airports, and mines easier to build with fewer regulations. This would affect the NEPA (National Environmental Policy Act), which assesses the impact the project would have on the environment. On January 1st the NEPA has been around for 50 years. Arguments in the article against NEPA is that it'll slow projects, derail projects, and increases costs. This is one of the most forceful efforts by the Trump administration to loosen the restraints on protection of the environment. This will make it easier to place pipes down and build without much resistance, where today it is controversial. But the Trump White House Council on Environmental Quality has pointed out that it has not been updated since 1978.

Reaction:

I disagree completely with weakening NEPA or making it loose on its control on construction projects. The act was made for a reason to protect the environment from projects that could destroy the land and the ecosystems around it. I will say maybe NEPA needs to be looked over since it was made 50 years ago now and times have changed. But, I don't think it should be weakened or loosened to the point that its not even doing its job anymore and the businesses can do whatever they please.

  1. I also disagree with weakening the NEPA. I feel like it should not be easier to build things like highways or mines with fewer regulations because this could pollute more of the environment if there are less regulations on building these projects.

  2. Weakening NEPA would allow companies to make more money, which is probably one of the main reasons Trump is encouraging it. The only thing Trump is taking into account is the economic factor instead of how it could add a lot more pollutants into the environment. Since NEPA hasn't been changed in 50 years, there should be new changes to fit today's society. Especially with global warming and how much pollution needs to be restricted in a chance to save the Earth.
