California Sea Lions Keep Getting Shot by Fishermen

Around 700 California sea lions have been found dead with bullet fragments in their bodies in the past 20 years. Fishermen claim that these sea lions steal their fishing bait and ultimately interfere with their livelihoods. This not only leads to a fluctuation of the sea lion population, but it also can lead to a fluctuation of the sea lions' prey population. I believe that this is unfair to the sea lions because all they are trying to do is find food to survive off of. Also, I believe that more of the perpetrators must be captured and punished in order to protect the sea lions and other marine animals.

    This is so sad. People should be punished for this act and there should be laws forbidding it.

    I agree that these fisherman should be held accountable for their actions. They are intruding on another living species' home and need to respect that fact.

    I agree. There should be better ways to deal with this that are less harmful to the sea lions and to all involved. There has to be a better way to handle the situation other than the fishermen just killing them.

     According to the University of Delaware, the Chesapeake Bay is becoming acidic as it has gone to 7.4 pH from an average of 8.2. The oxidation of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide may be the factor that is leading to the higher acidity levels in coastal oceans, but it can eventually lead to more of open oceans. Naturally the waters of the Chesapeake Bay have a regulatory system that holds back the increase of acidity levels in the area, and this works as the dissolving of living shells, non-living aragonite, and calcite minerals.
