Giraffes are a species that have experienced a population drop of 150,000 worldwide in 1985 to 100,000 in 2016. The main factors contributing to this rapid decrease is habitat loss and poachers. In the United States, nearly 40,000 giraffe parts were imported in a 9 year period and are legally being used to make expensive goods like pillows, footwear, knifes, bible covers, and other small items. It is really disappointing to see that the United States is contributing to the endangerment of a species and allowing their body parts to be legally sold. Our government should not be endorsing the behavior of these poachers and instead the focus should be on stopping this epidemic and preserving wildlife.

This is really sad to hear about. I saw this article as well and it made me sad to think about giraffes being used for such things.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Caitlin! Wild life should be preserved and knowing that giraffes are used for other things than their own personal purpose is upsetting. We should be focusing more on these kind of epidemics as well
ReplyDeleteMany people don't know that these is happening to giraffes. I just learning about this a couple days ago and it was shocking that people would do that to innocent animals.
ReplyDeleteIt is very disappointing that the US is partaking in selling items made from endangered animals. This should not be occurring and there needs to be more protective techniques in place to eliminate this from happening and punishing those who are doing this.
ReplyDeleteSelling animal parts such as giraffe parts should be illegal. There are other resources that could be used to make those things instead of giraffes.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. Giraffes are an endangered animal and shouldn't be used for decoration. Unfortunately, there is assholes in this world who think its OK to kill animals for fun and sell them for profit.
