The Race to Stop Africa's Elephant Poachers

This article highlights many of the countless horrors that come with elephant poachers in Chad, and other areas of Africa. It describes instances of elephant slaughter, economic results from the sale of elephant materials, the lack of political action in protection of elephants, and the finding of specific elephant poachers. I believe that this article does an amazing job of factually pinpointing all of the impacts of elephant killings. I found it extremely impactful, especially when it mentions the resemblance of human emotions and tendencies that are found in herds of elephants. I was also shocked when the article pointed out that minimal government action is in place to stop elephant slaughter and sale, and in fact, ivory trade has been legalized in parts of China.

  1. It is very upsetting to hear that the government is not stepping in to put an end to elephant poaching. The problem is now on the rise due to it becoming legal in different parts of the world. At this rate, hopefully elephants do not come close to extinction.

  2. The protection of wildlife is an issue that needs to be given more attention than it currently has. Poaching is a huge issue regarding many different species of animals and it is disheartening seeing how little political action is being taken and this reminds me of global warming and how these are both topics that seem to be regarded as not as important in the eyes of people of power.

  3. The fact that ivory trade has been legalized in some areas is extremely upsetting. Poaching is becoming more and more of a issue, and it is scary how little the government is doing to put an end to it. Hopefully more people will speak up and protest this sport before elephants become extinct.

  4. It is so sad that we are still doing somewhat nothing about this situation. I know that most people are trying to fight it but it just doesn't seem like anything is getting done about it. And lets all remember that Mr. Trump said it was okay to trade elephant parts, some leader we have here.
