What do ducks hear? And why do we care?

A masters student in wildlife ecology spent two seasons working with ducks to find out what they hear underwater. She taught the ducks to associate sounds with a treat and had them peck a target when they heard it. Eventually, the ducks learned to respond to light by diving and pecking one target, and if they heard a sound underwater to come back up and peck another target. Only 9 of the 29 ducks studied made it to the final stage of the test. In the end, the ducks could hear well underwater, but only from a range of 1-3 kilohertz.
This is interesting because it was a study that has never been done before. It was also interesting because they used 3 different species, so I found out which duck is smarter.
