Major Cruise Line to Abandon Plastic

A Norwegian Cruise Line has decided that by November, there will no longer be plastic water bottles offered on the ships.  The plan was made to reduce as much plastic and waste that is created with 4,000 passengers on ship.  Instead of plastic, they are using a brand called Just Water.  Just Water makes their cartons out of paper and the cap of the bottle is made of sugar cane.  This creates a big significance since Norwegian Cruise Line is the third-largest cruise company.  Due to this action, a program has been highlighted which is called, O.S.C.A.R.S.  This program helps tourist operations lower their waste consumption which is a big step in improving our environment.  If more and more companies get involved, the bigger the difference will be made.  I believe that this is a great starting point in improving our environment.

    I think that this is a great idea because cruises go on all year and so many people are on them wasting plastic every day. This is good because the only difference is the material, so it is not a a big change for consumers on the ships. I believe this will help reduce plastic waste and keep it away from the oceans.

    I agree that this solution is a good starting point to helping our environment because it can promote other ideas around the globe that can also improve the environment. Using the system Just Water will not only eliminate the amount of pollution in bodies of water, but will also reduce the amount of plastic that is used in every day life on land.

Acid Zone in Chesapeake Bay Found

     According to the University of Delaware, the Chesapeake Bay is becoming acidic as it has gone to 7.4 pH from an average of 8.2. The oxidation of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide may be the factor that is leading to the higher acidity levels in coastal oceans, but it can eventually lead to more of open oceans. Naturally the waters of the Chesapeake Bay have a regulatory system that holds back the increase of acidity levels in the area, and this works as the dissolving of living shells, non-living aragonite, and calcite minerals.
