Salt marshes carbon storing capacity threatened by nitrogen pollution

Scientists at the Marine Biological Laboratory have found that nitrate stimulates the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. In their study, the scientists have found that the abundance of nitrate among salt marshes decreases their ability to store carbon. The scientists suggest that if we, mankind, wish to rely on salt marshes for and carbon systems for the storing of carbon, that we must better understand the abilities of nitrate and it's effects on salt marshes. Without the salt marshes ability to hold carbon, due to the nitrate pollutant, our Earth will become further polluted and the carbon and respiration cycles with find struggles to come. The scientists are further looking into the nitrate and it's effects on the salt marshes as well as the carbon emissions in the salt marshes. I believe the article was informative and described what and how the nitrate is as well as the possible side effects of too much carbon in a salt marsh ecosystem.

  1. I agree that this article is very interesting. I really like that they link climate change to another type of ecosystem that is dwindling. If we don't preserve these salt marshes, we could be putting ourselves at more risk. I think this is an important topic that should be shared.

Sorry, I shared with the wrong account the first time!!

  2. I think that this topic is important to share and better inform people that climate change is harming more than just ice caps or forests. Although those things are important, it is also important to find solutions to protect salt marshes that play such an important role in storing carbon.

  3. This blog post really does coincide with what we have been learning in class lately about the ecosystems and nutrient cycles that affect them! However, other than the fact that it is easier to understand due to what we have learned already in class, this post is also good because it brings about an important topic that considers how climate change affects a specific ecosystem. Overall, this post shows that from the climate change effects presented in these salt marshes, it isn't that beyond comprehension to think that the same issues will present themselves in other ecosystems that have similar characteristics.
