North America Has Lost Nearly 3 Million Birds Since 1970

Over the past 50 years North America has lost about 3 billion birds and experts are not really sure why. Species like sparrows and blackbirds are taking the biggest hit in population drop. However, some species of birds are reporting stable numbers.

If this trend continues, we could could see a huge problems arise among ecosystems. Birds play huge roles in ecosystems such as insect control which could lead and insects running rampant in ecosystems.  Also some species of birds are considered keystone species so we could see ecosystems start to fail.

  1. I wonder if there is more research that have reported Sparrow and Blackbird populations dropping since 1970. Because if so, wouldn't we have heard it in the news? The only news I've ever heard about birds is when there was a disease and it was killing quite a few of them in America a few years ago. Over a short span of time. I don't really remember the name or cause, but I do remember something like that happening to birds. There are so many birds out in the world that I didn't even noticed a change in the numbers of birds. What I'm wondering though is what is causing the big drop in population of the Sparrows and Blackbirds?

  2. It seems odd that no exact reason could be found. Perhaps it has something to do with the diet of the birds or the habitats in which they live in. While it is just North America, there is a drastic difference from Nova Scotia to Phoenix, and I would wonder if there is something going on in certain areas that could cause the decline in population.
