Philadelphia Oil Refinery Explosion

On Friday, June 21, 2019, Philadelphia Energy Solutions had an explosion at the oil refinery. Philadelphia Energy Solutions is the largest oil refinery on the Eastern Seaboard and can produce up to 335,000 barrels of crude oil per day. There were reports of a small fire earlier on in the month but this explosions rattle was felt as far away as Delaware. Residents say the air quality has given them health issues and illness before the incident. Mayor, Jim Kenney, said he expected the plant closure to affect 1,000 jobs.
I believe it was a very different, exciting, and scary thing to witness in the middle of the night. It was also probably harder to breath days after the explosion.

  1. I always wonder why they put facilities like this so close to residents or put residents so close to the facilities, I understand that's where the resource is but a few miles away from where people live with their families can't be the only place for them to make and find oil.

  2. Does the company responsible for the explosion bear any legal obligation for people injured from the reduced air quality, rubble, etc? If not, what would be considered responsible, if anyone?

  3. Do you think more air quality studies will be conducted to make sure surrounding families of facilities like these aren't so negatively impacted?

  4. How do think the closure of this plant is going to affect the surrounding area? It sounds like it was a big part of the surrounding areas income. How will they replace these lost jobs? It seems like this closure could really hurt its towns people. I hope a new corporation will move in with lots of job openings.

  5. Is this company going to be held accountable for any of the illnesses of the residents in the nearby area? Will the affected individuals get any compensation for their illnesses caused by the company's carelessness?

  6. It's a shame that it exploded, I'm sure it put a lot of people out of a job.
