Immediate Climate Action Is Needed to Avoid “Grim” Future, Scientists Warn
Many scientists are greatly concerned that greenhouse gas emissions are becoming threatening to the environment. They say that these emissions could lead to "catastrophic circumstances" all over the world if we do not change the amount of green house gasses we emit. These green house gasses mainly effect climate change. Climate change has already affected everything from food supply to the existence of island nations. Because of green house gasses heatwaves are intensifying in North America and Europe. Underwater heatwaves are also killing deep water habitats and coral reefs.
Adding to that, insect populations are declining which is changing the food chain in many ecosystems. Another devastating affect of climate change is forest fires. The fires have killed more than 100 people in California since 2017, and continue to destroy ecosystems and communities around the world.
The U.N. is trying to take action to stop climate change. They have invited world leaders to cut their green house gas emissions by 45% over the next decade. The planet has already risen 1 degree in overall surface temperature, scientists say if it is to rise 2 more degrees that the consequences would be great. The U.N. stated that if $2-$4.5 trillion were spent each year to prevent the 2 degree increase it would prevent of $500 trillion in damages. Global warming is happening and if we don't do something to change it now, we will suffer the consequences later. Many scientists believe that the picture for humans is grim if we don't achieve this.
This can relate to class because we talked a lot about how fragile ecosystems are, and because of climate change many ecosystems are being disrupted. For example, climate change is affecting people by intensifying hurricanes, heat waves and drought and by reducing crop yields, seafood supplies and fresh water. Climate change also endangers ecosystems such as coral reefs, which have faced extensive damage already. I think this is important because if we don't control the mount of green houses gasses we emit our planet is going to pay the price.

It is true that if our current practices continue into the next 100 years a cataclysmic event will occur. This will be the sixth one in human history and the first brought on by humans. What would be the first sign of a major down spiral in the next few decades?
ReplyDeleteI agree that if we do not make a substantial change in the ways we are attacking climate change we will have many disasters that cause lots of damage. If we manage to slow the rate of climate change that would be remarkable.
