NASA is building a telescope that can detect asteroids that could threaten earth. This could potentially launch within the next decade. This infrared telescope will The Near-Earth Object Surveillance Mission, which will cost $500 million to $600 million. first thought of by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab in California 15 years ago. A telescope is needed for meeting a congressional requirement that NASA is to detect 90% of all potentially dangerous asteroids and comets of at least 140 meters in diameter by the end of 2020. To have this kind of telescope to identify asteroids that could harm earth is huge for lots of reasons. If we don't identify them, they could hit earth and cause issues for people, animals, habitats and lots of other things. So to have this kind of technology is revolutionary.

  1. I believe that this kind of technology will play an important role in out future. Being able to detect asteroids and comets before they hit Earth would allow us to get a head start in protecting people. This is especially true if this telescope can detect the dark asteroids that we currently cannot detect with out technology.

  2. I would agree that having the technology to detect potentially dangerous asteroids is revolutionary, and that it could possibly launch within the next decade is just insane. However, being able to see them doesn't really help us out all that much, because they could still hit Earth if they are on the correct path. Hopefully NASA builds off of this invention and also comes up with safe, efficient ways to prevent dangerous asteroids from hitting the Earth.

  3. I find it amazing that we are developing the technology to potentially detect harmful asteroids. Even though we are able to detect the asteroids doesn't mean that we are safe. We still would have to find a safe way to deflect the asteroid away from Earth which could be very dangerous. Overall this is truly an incredible advancement in our technology.
