Antarctica is melting!

In January of this year, El Niño brought unusually warm weather in the middle of winter. Now, scientists have discovered a 300,000 square mile part of a West Antarctica Ice Sheet is melting. El Niño pushed warm water underneath the ice sheet and a fluke rain fall also occurred, creating a slush-like coating on the top of the ice sheet. A posing threat from the rain fall and slush is the melting could lead to a weakened ice shelf in similar areas in West Antarctica which would force the ice sheet to break and create large rivers or waterfalls. Once the water breaks through the ice shelf it will rapidly heighten sea levels, posing another threat, obviously.

  1. This article only furthers the concept of global warming and the effects it is having in even the coldest of places. Although mostly uninhabited by humans, Antarctica is home to many polar animals that thrive off of the harsh environment. Dramatic changes in wildlife will occur in Antarctica if the ice sheet continues to melt. The stretches of global warming are reaching farther and farther each day and impacting more and more species all over the world.
