Exposure to Nature Leads to Smarter Kids

A study completed by 253 students in the BREATHE project in Spain. It was the first study done that evaluates exposure to green-space and brain structure. The data shows that being exposed to nature which led to higher scores on cognitive tests and showed better working memory and being more attentive. During the 12 month study period, it was found that this occurred in schools that had higher outdoor green-space. It also leads to better health overall the span of your lifetime if exposed to nature. I think this is interesting because it shows how much the environment affects behaviors and growth.

  1. I think this is so neat! I did not realize how the environment affect the development of children besides in physical way. If this study would become more popular in the United States and other countries, maybe this would lead to more of an outdoor setting for schools. I hope more people see this and spend more of their time outdoors instead of inside.

  2. I have seen other articles about this and this is a cool concept to follow, perhaps maybe this could be something our school could try? I personally believe that this does work and it is definitely something that should be studied further.

  3. This is very interesting! I think that schools should provide more evironmental science classes in order to bring grades up, provide more cognitive thinking, and having more information on the nature topics and how to help.

  4. I think that this is so cool that there is a connection to the outdoors and the biology of humans. I think that it is very important to get kids outside and enjoy the outdoors instead of spending all their time with technology. I think a big factor of going outside with kids is the encouragement of parents and teachers to go outside.

  5. I think that this is really neat because I did not realize how much nature affected us. I think that we should have something like this at our school, it would be pretty cool and I would be interested in a project like this! I think this could lead to more outdoor involvement for kids and schools.

  6. I love this article! With all of the technology that is available today, many kids sit on tablets or phones or stare at TV screens all day. Hopefully this article will shed light on the problems that arise when children aren't exposed to nature and instead are attached to electronic screens all day.
