A new way to genetically tweak photosynthesis boosts plant growth
An important factor for photosynthesis in plants is photo respiration. Some field studies showed that genetically modifying this in plants (Tabasco) has increased plant growth by 40 percent. If this study work on other plant types, it can increase the production of crops.
I think this is a really good idea to help the production of crops to help make food. However, there's the chance that this study ends up failing on other plants, going back to square one.

It's important to at least give this a try and if it fails there could always be a better alternative.
ReplyDeleteIts cool that scientists are trying to increase plant growth, this will help farmers fill the ever growing demand for food. There's also the chance that it could backfire and the plants take longer to grow or the genetic modification could harm the people who consume the plants.
ReplyDeleteCutting photorespiration out of the equation would certainly be worth it for the increased crop production. Especially so since it seems to be an unnecessary step.
ReplyDeleteThis could be a a great solution to world hunger in countries that struggle to produce their own food
