Tidal Floods Driven By Climate Change May Hurt Small Businesses

Rising sea levels due to climate changes has caused floods along the United States coastlines. It has been recorded that the floods last about a few hours once every week. These floods have affected traffic patterns leading to a revenue loss for businesses. Miyuki Hino, an environmental social scientist at Stanford University, and her colleagues observed flood events caused by tides and looked at parking transactions in a nearby lot to look for changes in parking revenues. Drops in visitation occurred at the same time as flood events, which contributed to about 3,000 less visitors based on how severe the flooding was. They also looked at daily revenues for downtown businesses on dates that flooded, which showed that revenues dropped between $86,000 to $172,000. These numbers are only expected to increase as seas are expected to continue to rise in the future. Not only are the losses in revenues going to be devastating, but the physical damages that these floods will cause to society will be pretty severe as well. Therefore, the economy and the environment will be affected by these floods, and humans can’t do much, if anything, about it.
