Great White Shark Genome Decoded

Link
By decoding a shark's genome, it revealed the genomes huge size as well as possible evolutionary changes that had occurred over time.  Scientists also found that their genome has the highest number of genes called LINEs.  Scientists thought these sharks would have a higher risk of developing cancer, but it turns out they don't, suggesting they may have developed cancer-protective abilities. By finding out this information, we now know more about how sharks have evolved and it may help with protecting them from extinctions since their numbers are dropping.  I think this discovery of great white shark's genomes is important for developing new theories to help us better understand these creatures of the sea.

  1. This is a really cool discovery and I find it fascinating that scientists can find information as specific as the likelihood of these sharks getting cancer.
