Creatures in the deepest trenches of the sea are eating plastic

Plastic has reached all parts of the sea. Amphipods live in the deepest trenches, and microplastic pieces were found in over 72 percent of the amphipods collected. Plastic was found in five sampled trenches, including the Marina trench which is 72,000 feet under the sea. Traps with bait were used to collect the amphipods, and their digestive systems were closely examined. The deeper the trench, the more plastic was found. Amphipods could possibly transfer this plastic throughout the food chain. This issue is highly alarming, and greater reform must happen immediately. The current wave of reform with reducing straw use is a good place to start, but we need to increase the urgency with our efforts.

  1. This issue is disheartening, especially since it could have been avoided. The plastic pollution that humans caused has gotten way out of hand. We must strive to be more environmentally friendly in order to protect marine life.

  2. This is very upsetting. We definitely need to work more quickly to fix this issue before it can get any worse.
