Climate change threatens future Winter Olympics

The rapidly changing climate may become an issue in the future Winter Olympics. Studies are showing that by the end of this century, more than half of the host cities will be too hot to host the Winter Olympics. The Olympics aren't the only thing at risk either, “the world of winter sports is changing as the global climate continues to warm,” says Daniel Scott. Winter Olympics are usually held every four years. Scott and his team team considered projections for future weather in 21 cities. These included the 19 cities that already have hosted Winter Olympics. The good news is he predicts that Both PyeongChang and Beijing should be cold enough in February for winter Olympic games through 2080.

I believe Climate Change is becoming a real problem but at least we know the Winter Olympics will be held somewhere. Even though its okay right now, this is just another reason that proves the climate is changing and we need to try and do something about it before its too late.

  1. Is climate change really a threat the Winter Olympics faces? A lot of money goes through the Olympic games, and while climate change poses a threat to the world, I don't think it is out of the question to move the games further north or invest in giant snow machines or some other solution.

  3. I see your point chase however, I agree with Aiden. The Olympics in Pyeongchang cost about $13 billion dollars and the Olympics in Sochi cost $51 billion. If needed I believe that more funds would spent to move the Olympics more north or buy some type of solution to the problem. I'm not denying that climate change isn't real, but I don't think we have to worry about climate change affecting the Olympics.

  4. I agree I feel like if they will need to they absolutely find a way no matter how much money it costs or they may even move it to a cooler, more wintery area. I don't feel like the weather will affect the winter olympics.

  5. I would agree that there would be some ways to prevent the Winter Games being ruined by climate change, but climate change itself cannot be changed as easily. I believe that we should take this as a warning that climate change is only getting worse, and that immediate action is necessary not just for the Games, but for the planet in general. The fact that more than half of the host cities will be too hot to host the Winter Games is truly alarming, and something definitely needs to be done about it. Overall, we should use these statistics as motivation to help reverse the affects of climate change and save the Winter Games and our planet.
