Power Lines Messing With Honeybees Ability to Learn

Power lines have been emitting electromagnetic fields that have been altering the insects ability to learn and behavior. A Plos one study, done in October, shows that honeybees were more aggressive than the other, unexposed honeybees after being exposed to electromagnetic fields at similar strength that might be experienced at ground level. Those exposed were also slower responding to new threats. These findings may be a clue as to why there has been a recent decline in honeybee colonies. Previous beekeeper reports show that colonies last year experienced the worst winter die off, and some colonies even vanished completely. While these power lines are not the only cause that are hurting the bees, but it is one of the factors that has been effecting them.
This is very interesting because it seems like many people are unaware of how much something simple like power lines have been effecting bees so much. I am not exactly sure of how we can fix this problem, because of how important power lines are to everyone. But I do think it is vital that we protect the bees because of how important they are to the ecosystem and agriculture.

  1. It would be much easier to place bee hives than it would be to move power lines. Keeping bee hives on farms where there is vast land is a good idea
