PA Sunday hunting

Last wednesday the PA house passed a bill that would allow hunting on three separate sundays. one during archery for deer and another during rifle season for deer. this bill also places harsher punishment on people who commit trespassing laaws by increasing fines. the reasoning for this law is to help encourage more people to go out and hunt and to help manage the Chronic Wasting Disease epidemic.

I think this is a great idea! as a hunter and a student i am limited to hunting one day a week since by the time i get home from school, hunting hours are over and by adding just one extra day may get more people out and enjoy the sport.

  1. I think this could be a good thing to put into place to help control the deer population. I also agree with adding another day specifically for people who work and can not take off, and for students who can not miss school to go hunting.

    1. I agree that adding three separate Sundays would definitely help the people who have school or work to go out hunting. Like you said by the time students get home from school the prime hunting hours are over or you only have like two hours to hunt before sunset. And for people who don't hunt, sitting for two hours really isn't much considering the noise you make going in and getting settled. I know many people are against hunting, but if you wouldn't have hunters the deer population will get so out of hand it would become a major problem. Not only for plants species, but for the farming community as well. I know farmers have asked people in my family to hunt on their land because of the huge deer population in their area. And the farmers way of making money IS to farm, and how can they do that if the deer are eating everything in their path including their crops.

  3. I don't necessarily agree with Sunday hunting for reasons being of it not being a sustainable way of keeping a balanced deer heard. The possibilities of hunting Sundays wouldn't give deer a chance to have unpressed day time movement. This will most likely cause nocturnal movement patterns instead of daytime movement which will cause you to have less deer harvesting chances and more deer to car damage due to the nocturnal movement patterns. There are already programs in place to assist with agricultural damage due to deer. For example, the Agricultural Deer Control (Red Tag) Program is a prevention for the crop damage such as corn, soy beans, peas, and many other agricultural resources. There are also game lands and access areas in place for deer management that gives those school hunters closer options for hunting locally for the minimal time remaining after school, work, and other daily events go as they go on. Proper deer management is also key to success. This could be implemented by not shooting yearling deer or using the method "If its brown, Its down". Each mature deer eats on average about 3,000 lbs of food a year. Proper doe and overall deer heard management could assist with this issue.
