Rising Seas Will Erase More Cities by 2050

November 8, 2019

The authors of a paper published Tuesday discovered a more accurate way of calculating land elevation based on satellite readings. The new research shows that 150 million people are currently living on land that will eventually be below the high tide line. More than 20 million people in Vietnam, living on land, will be inundated. A researcher for Climate Control says the satellites struggle to differentiate the true ground level from the tops of trees or buildings. According to the earlier technique, only 1% of Thailand was supposed to be underwater, new techniques show that more than 10% will be underwater by 2050, making a more accurate statement. This relates to what we are talking about currently in class because it is affecting populations.

  1. This is a scary fact because it shows just how soon human activities will be affecting human life on a larger scale. If humans do not make drastic changes soon, this could affect our future generations dramatically.

  2. It is the fact that this is unavoidable event that makes this article the scariest. Are there any plans of how to prepare people for the changing waters?

  3. The article real brings the effects of climate change into effect. To think than 150 million people and their homes could be under water by 2050 is very scary. Hopefully we are able to reverse some of the effects of climate change, so that these populations are not destroyed.

  4. I agree it is extremely scary in a sense that New York City, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, etc, could all be under water in less then 50 years, that's our lifetime. I'm very interested to see the possible solutions the UN and world leaders come up with.
