This article describes a test done on plastic bags that are said to decompose. The test was to see which type of plastic bag decomposed the best in different environments. In a saltwater environment only one of the three bags was fully decomposed after three years. The compostable bag was the only one to disappear completely. They then found that all bags decomposed in the air environment, but this was due to the effect the sun had on breaking down the molecules. Overall, they found that the bags were unable to decompose in most environments and therefore were a risk to the life in those environments. The ending conclusion was that the only way to reduce the waste from plastic bags is to simply use less. Reuse old ones, or don't use them in the first place and this is how the waste will be stopped.

I found this article to be very informing on the study performed, but also found it repetitive of the events that have lately been in the news. I feel like we all know that the simple answer to reduce the pollution is to use less. But, is this accomplished by the average person going to the store? No, it is not, most are using the cheapest and fasted bagging method to get out of the store quickly and cheaply. If we want to stop the problem more widespread solutions are going to have to be spread that are cheap and do not waste time for them to be adapted by a wide group of people

  1. This is very interesting and informative as plastics destroying environments has been a popular topic. Everyone has been trying to find a way to make plastic bags that can easily be decomposed, but the simple answer may just be that it is not possible for this to be created. In my opinion it's important to keep all environments as clean as possible to ensure that animals do not suffer or soon become even extinct from human trash.

  2. This is a definitely a unique read with very interesting information about this issue. I think that the only way that we are every going to get through this, and fix this, is if everyone where to work together. Maybe over time, store will provide reusable bags, or stop using plastic bags completely. People who use plastic bags, could also take them to a local place that will take those bags and recycle them.

  3. This is a very interesting article as this topic of if plastic bags are decomposeable or not. As stated in this article it seems that most plastic bags are not be decomposed in most environments in three years. The only solution may be to lower the amount of plastic bags and make them out of another material.
