A Massive Net is Being Deployed to Pick Up Plastic in the Pacific

The Ocean Cleanup have come up with a project to help collect plastics in the ocean. Scientists set up a study where they placed a net in one area where it collected about 1.8 trillion pieces of debris. With larger areas, this would allow a bigger cleanup of the plastic in the ocean. However, many scientists are skeptical about whether or not this project will work in the long run.

I believe that this project is someway affective in collecting plastics in the ocean. However, it is not very effective and not all plastics will be caught within the net. There is also the concern about wildlife getting caught within the netting.

    I agree with the goal that this plan is designed to achieve. However, it would have been beneficial if the net was able to capture only plastic and not marine life.

    its interesting to see that they are coming up with new ways to collect plastics in the Ocean the only problem with that is the net may come to harm the fish in the environment if not properly watched

    I personally believe that it is a good idea to try to combat the problem of plastics in the ocean, and even if it may not be very effective in the long run, it is better than standing by and doing nothing.

    This would be a very difficult thing to do since it would capture fish and other sea life, but at least they are making an effort to help the oceans.

Acid Zone in Chesapeake Bay Found

     According to the University of Delaware, the Chesapeake Bay is becoming acidic as it has gone to 7.4 pH from an average of 8.2. The oxidation of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide may be the factor that is leading to the higher acidity levels in coastal oceans, but it can eventually lead to more of open oceans. Naturally the waters of the Chesapeake Bay have a regulatory system that holds back the increase of acidity levels in the area, and this works as the dissolving of living shells, non-living aragonite, and calcite minerals.
