The Global Food Waste Scandal

This Ted Talk by Tristam Stuart discusses the unbelievable amount of food that we waste and the ways we can possibly limit the amount of food that waste. One particular statistic that he mentions really struck me. He states that America produces four times the amount of food that is needed to feed every American person. We have surpluses of food yet we throw away absurd amounts of it. We do not use our global food supply in efficient or productive ways, especially when we have one billion people who are starving. After watching this video, I think that it is super important that we, as a community, country and world, need to put more effort to limit the food that unnecessarily throw away.

  1. I agree that we waste so much food when others have so little and are starving. I think that everyone who has enough needs to stop wasting so much. I think that one way we could handle the problem of wasting so much is cutting the portion sizes in restaurants and other food places. That way we can eliminate people throwing away the food that they are unable to finish.

  2. I agree that we waste too much food. I believe we should put more time and effort into food drives for people and countries that are underdeveloped that have less food then us. We also need to consider that most places struggling are behind on development. Perhaps we can further help them by bringing ways of farming to them. As for the waste of food we throw away we should consider smaller portions and healthier selections.

  3. I think in recent years what is ridiculous is that no longer are companies allowed to give extra food away at night for free, but rather have to throw it away. You used to be able to get free doughnuts at Hess when they were closing. There are a lot of people that would benefit from food free at night, but instead they have to dumpster dive.
Fun Fact: Dumpster diving is legal unless it says no trespassing or says otherwise.

  4. I agree that the amount of food the United States wastes needs to be cut back. Food that is still in edible condition is being thrown away for no reason while people in third world countries are starving as we don't even think twice about trowing away food.

  5. It is true that in America we do waste a lot of food and we do need to fix it because the amounts of food that we waste is becoming ridiculous when we could be sure to keep our food so it can last to its full span.

  6. I found this article honest yet disgusting. I am happy to see a TED Talk informing the people about the sad truth. Where I work, I see how much food is being wasted. We need to find a way to use the uneaten food to good use. People are starving in many different countries and need help, and we are just wasting food. The fact that you stated is honestly mind blowing and sad.
